hey all.

Just opened the pool. Was met with very cloudy water. Assumed I need to try the slam.

Tested water.
Ph 7.2
Fc 0
Cc 0
Ch 550-525
Cya can’t get a reading.
Water temp 55 degrees

I kind of expected zero chlorine. My Cya was about 30 when I closed. So I’m surprised that I can’t get any reading.

I guess my question is what do I do first? I need to get chlorine in the pool. But I can’t slam without the Cya info. Should I assume I’m at maybe 15-20 cya and add to reach 30/40? I like mine right between 30-40. Then slam? Or should I get chlorine in asap. If so. How much?

Help.

1. Increase the FC to 10 with liquid chlorine. Add nothing else yet. Re-test in 10 minutes with good circulation. FC should be at least 5 ppm or more. If so, go to item #2. If the FC crashed below 5, bump it back up and repeat the test in 10 min. Continue until the FC shows signs of holding.
2. Once the FC is showing sogns of holding, then you can add the stabilizer for a CYA target of 30.

At this point, you can also increase the FC to 12 and follow the SLAM Process. Good luck!

Ok. So I did not get to add anything to the pool today. I have tomorrow off, but am working regular hours the rest of the week. With the water temp at 55 degrees, can I get away with slamming on the weekend? Or should I go for it tomorrow? I could test and add chemicals Tuesday morn, then not till about 5:30. Don’t want to waste chemicals if I can’t keep up. I could crank the swg while at work? Not confident on how to proceed.

From this link. Print it out, read it three times. Having a printed copy really helped me. Link-->SLAM Process

Test and adjust chlorine levels as frequently as practical, but not more than once per hour, and not less than twice a day. Chlorine additions should be frequent, especially at the beginning. Algae and other organic debris will consume chlorine very rapidly at first.

With cold water, I would go for it tomorrow. Test and add every 2 hours hours tomorrow. Start early and go as late into the night as you can. Then do it tues morning, then 5:30, then every two hours into the night on work days as late as you can go. Turn off the SWCG, not made for that.

Have the chlorine ready! How many gallons on hand?

ok. Thanks. I’ve got 4 gallons of the 12.5 percent. And a couple wal mart gallons the I think are 6-7 percent. That should be ok I think? I’ll go for it tomorrow morn. Hopefully the sunlight won’t screw me. And I hope I can get a decent Cya reading.

Be ready to make a chlorine run. If you are going to nail this in a day, every two hours, you may need more.

So far so good. Added chlorine. First test was low. Added more. Second test was at 7.5. Added more and threw the cya socks in the skimmer baskets.

I’ll test again after I return from the dentist. Hopefully all will continue as predicted.

So the last three tests show .5 cc. Still losing some chlorine. But not as much. Just tested. Fc is at 9. Cc .5.
Need to add the juice.

Stay the course I assume? And the Cya is still dissolving. I should bump the chlorine needs to what they should be with 30 cya yes? It’s basically get the Fc to 10 or 12. 20 cya and 30 cya.

Wouldn’t stop it yet for sure. Water is far from clear. Think I can put the robot vacuum in during the slam? It could help circulate and pick up some Crud.

Yeah - robot, brush, whatever you got to do to keep it agitated and remove debris.

So. I am kind of assuming that the chlorine is getting to the proper slam level. I add the recommended amounts. But then I don’t check it for an hour or so. When I do it’s always under slam level. It does make sense because it’s eating up the nasties. But it still gives me anxiety.

One sock dissolved. The other has a little bit left.

If you’re not 100% sure if the chlorine is fresh or if the pool is the size you think it is, you can test sooner.
