Zeolite Sand Issue

Hello All!

I have recently had zeolite sand install in my Pentair Tagelus 60D. It calls for 325 pounds of silica sand so, per instructions, I replaced it with half the amount of pounds with zeolite.

I backwashed and rinsed the sand throughly per instruction but noticed some sand flowing back into the water. The laterals are not broken as I inspected them thoroughly. I have a variable-speed pump and when the rpm’s turned up I noticed it going into the pool. Is it possible that the water was flowing too fast? Or did I just put a little too much of it in?

Thank you all for you help, I really appreciate it!!

Hi!

Not many people here use Zeo, and because so many members have reported the same issue...zeo pushed back to the pool, we don't recommend Zeo. Best to use the correct size pool sand as recommended by the filter manufacturer. That is trouble free.

That being said, I use Zeo. I like it. I still wouldn't recommend because of the problem you encountered. Having said that, the reason could be two fold. 1) you need to backwash and rinse a couple times, for like 5-8 minutes each to really get the tiny particles out when you first load the Zeo. 2) Even then, the zeo is likely going to always do this. We believe that we tracked the issue to the varying manufacturing plants/locations. Apparently different plant/sources produce different size zeo. Problem is, you don't know if you are getting zeo of the size you need. (Its a bit more technical than that, but best explanation I can give.

Best advice I can give: Zeo likes low and slow. Most of us with Zeo have learned to run our pumps 11-1400 and it works great. Whatever lowest speed will keep the SWCG running (if you have one).

Hope this helps.

Kevinm, I appreciate the question... Pool/Stored, THX for the comprehensive reply! I have read a few earlier closed Zeo-threads and was wondering if the site had changed its collective mind over the last few years... No change, PoolStored? I am attracted to the extra benefits of Zeo and will ignore the hassle, still worth it? Thx
PS- Ashtabula, really? Fam is from Chardon, lived there myself for about 15 years; I moved west back in 2010. Happy NEOH summer!

We don't recommend Zeo. Too many people have had issues with variability in sizing, blowout into the pool etc. It certainly isn't Trouble Free.

It has been the best summer, weather wise, in NEO I've had in 25 years.
