Yet another filter issue

I posted previously about my leaking sand filter which I attributed to the multiport valve assembly. After buying a new o-ring, lubing it, trying varying degrees of tightening, etc, I finally just ordered a new assembly which hasn't yet arrived.

Today, however, I discovered that the leak is actually coming from a hairline crack in the top of the filter body. Now I don't know if the new assembly will fit on a different brand of tank or if it has to be replaced with a Waterway. It's my understanding that filter cracks can't be repaired. I'm also wondering if the previous owner's change from 3/4 hp to 1.5 hp motor caused the crack. I can't afford new filter and motor atm.

On top of that, I'm losing apprx 2" of water every 24 hours so apparently have a pool leak as well which dye test and letting water level drop has yet to reveal.

Please don't respond with "pools take work". I know that! I've done nothing but work on it for 9 months now. I'm beyond discouraged and needed to vent.

After further research, I've found a reasonably priced Waterway filter body. I read here somewhere that a larger body might be a good idea, though I'm not sure if it's warranted with my smallish 14X28 pool. Currently have a 22" diam. Also, I plan to drop back down to 3/4 hp motor when I can afford it so not sure if larger body would be wise.

Yes, a bigger filter is always better. And generally smaller pool pumps are better, cheaper to run and good also. Most folks have pumps that are too big.

Pools work. Nah. :)

Thanks. Unfortunately, after my last post I went outside and just missed stepping on a cottonmouth despite my extensive snake prevention efforts (I'm severely phobic). To sum up my day: 3 hours cutting grass, migraine, crack in pool filter, cottonmouth. Worst birthday ever.
