Wrench for tight area on Hayward pump

One of my filter tops stops tightly in a certain place so that the wrench will not fit. The space between the 12'oclock position of the lid in this pic and the pipe coming up from the pump is too tight for the end of the wrench to fit in.

What is the remedy for this? Is there a type of wrench that will fit? Can I use some teflon tape to build up the threads so the lid tightens at the 10 o'clock position instead of where it does now?

It looks like the diameter of your lid is a bit larger than the pump basket. You might be able to use a strap-wrench around the lid. This one will handle up to 8" in diameter. That should be just big enough.

🙋‍♂️

Tighten downward from the left side. Not upward from the right side.

If the end of the wrench (and not the handle) doesn't fit, use a scrap of 2x4 between the lid handle and the wrench.
