Wiring in black & decker vsp to pro logic with automation adapter

So I upgraded from my single speed Hayward pump to a 3hp b&d variable speed pump and I'm having a hard time figuring out how to connect the b&d automation adapter to the pro logic pl-p-4 system. Can anyone assist? Thanks!

You need 1 relay for 1 speed, 2 relays for 2 speeds, or 3 relays for 3 speeds.

I only see 1 available relay in your pro logic pl-p-4 system.

You would have been better off buying a Hayward VS pump with RS-485 controls that will work directly with your ProLogic system.

Following the instructions that came with the adapter, disconnect the power from relay 1 (filter pump) and wire it directly to the pump as it needs constant power. Use that relay for one speed and relay 4 for another. You don't need all 4 speeds your pump can use, 2 are enough.

I guess I was thinking that this adapter would allow for the rs-485 controls. 😞 If it was between keeping my old one speed or spending a fortune on a Hayward vsp, I would still have my one speed.

All of my relays are high voltage relays though aren't they? Not sure why it's sold as working with pro logic systems if it's really not. The two speed thing sounds like it could work, still not sure of the relay capability though.

You can run any voltage through a relay.

Using the Automation Adapter you run the 5V speed control lines through the relays. As the instructions you posted show each control line selects a speed.

I guess I was having a hard time wrapping my head around it since they are constantly referred to a high voltage relay in the Pro Logic book. So if I'm tracking, pump gets direct wired into breaker and the comm wire supplies 5v to the relay and when it triggers, it sends 5v signal down the black, white or yellow wire. I drew a diagram to confirm my understanding. I'm just trying to find the best way to get around all this as my Pro Logic controls my salt cell and I figured it should control my pump as well. Oddly enough the previous home owner isn't using the Pro Logic for heater, valves or anything else so I'm slowly adding/hooking up to the system.

They are called "high-voltage" relays because they can handle high voltage. They actually only send whatever voltage is on the 1 or 3 terminals to whatever device is on the 2 or 4 terminals. They can easily handle the 5V that the adapter sends.

I didn't know if I should start a new thread but I've developed a new issue since wiring in the automation adapter. Now after running for 45 seconds or so, the pump will ramp to 0rpm and immediately back to full speed. It will do this both at full speed or half speed setting (Aux 2). I can properly control the pump speed using the Pro Logic and I set up the Pro Logic for two speed pump. Also, there are no relays in the Pro Logic clicking when this happens, it seems to be going on inside of the pump itself/adapter. It didn't do this before and there are no error codes or anything else concerning. The pump is also set on manual mode. :(

I should mention that the pump screen never shuts off, it just slows down and then starts right back up.

That sounds like a defective pump drive. I would open a warranty claim with B+D and see what they do.
 
Where did you buy your B&D pump? At poolpartstogo.com? My pump turned noisy after a couple of weeks and they sent the replacement right away. The new pump doesn't have any problems.

Yes pool parts to go. This is how I have it wired. Yellow is not connected in the pro logic side.

Now after running for 60 seconds, the pump will ramp to 0rpm and immediately back to full speed. It will do this both at full speed or half speed setting (Aux 2). I can properly control the pump speed using the Pro Logic and I set up the Pro Logic for two speed pump. Also, there are no relays in the Pro Logic clicking when this happens, it seems to be going on inside of the pump itself/adapter. It didn't do this before and there are no error codes or anything else concerning. The pump is also set on manual mode. :(

I should mention that the pump screen never shuts off, it just slows down and then starts right back up. Poolpartstogo have been very responsive to help with my issue with the pump. They sent me a new motor controller (or whatever the big grey box is called) as well as a new automation adapter. However, when I swapped it all over, it appeared to be fixed for a few hours or overnight and today when I got home, it was doing again (see video below). Again, I don't hear any of the relays in the pro logic when it is stopping. I'm waiting for them to respond again but I figured I'd ask you guys to have more eyes on the problem.

Also, if I switch back to the manual factory control panel it does not exhibit these symptoms.

I've attached some photos of how I have it wired in case Ive overlooked something.


I figured Id start a new thread since its pretty far off from my old question.
