Several questiions ...
Using the TFP method of chlorine only for west central Ohio, installed Sept 2021
17,500 gal pool vinyl above ground pool
18" Hayward sand filter runs 24/7.
Not looking forward to opening the pool this 2025 due to so many fights with algae blooms in 2024. My trouble usually starts with the spraying of fields via helicopter coming up and going down right over our pool to hit the field that is separated from our pool with only with a power line. Our lawn is usually treated within the same week. Our pool turns cloudy, and then I start fighting green.
I use chlorine only except while on vacation I add a 1" trichlor puck per day in a floater, because the pool remains accessible in our absence to our children and grands, but not knowing if and when someone will come and go, I cannot depend on them maintaining an even chlorine addition as needed. Is there a better option?
Last summer, though I backwashed and rinsed regularly when in the midst of another algae bloom, I suspect I never fully cleaned the sand. There was always settlings on the pool floor, and I would see a dirty blowback into the pool for a couple of seconds when restarting the filter after a 2 minute backwash and rinse.
I struggled against high TA all summer of 130-160. 31.45% Muratic Acid didn't seem to make a difference.
We closed October 19, water temp 65 degrees, CYA 40, FC 12.5, TA 130, pH 7.8, CSI 0.47; I closed with 3 gallons of 12.5% chlorine, filtered for 24 hours, then unhooked everything and covered with a 1 yr old Midwest Canvas winter cover. Today, just 5 months later, that cover is literally shredded. We do have wind, but I suspicion it was chemical deterioration as much as the wind. What can I do differently this fall?
