Pool is finally clean. CYA is up to 30. Free chlorine is at 11, so need to dial back the SWG.

My pool surface is nearly 30 years old and has some pitting that manages to inhibit flow. Does anyone know of options to keep the bottom stirred up?

The bottom will mix fine. The low spots may collect more crud and stain there first, but the water itself is not the problem. There isn't much you can do besides brush more often.

Welcome Florida guy. I feel your pain.

My pool chews through CYA like nobody's business. I am sure it is a combination of rain, heat, direct sun. Anyway it uses a lot. So here is what I do. I test CYA often. I bought a LOT of CYA reagent so I pretty much test CYA everytime I test anything in the summer. I also buy CYA in as much bulk as possible. Just got 50 lbs for $130 delivered. Should last me almost 2 years.

It was 50 this morning so adding another 1.5 lbs right now. Will test again in the morning.

Not much useful information, but you are not alone, some pools are weird. I have one. You just need to adjust your processes for it. I also make sure that my FC is 10% of my CYA and when that is the case I have no trouble.

Make really sure that you passed all 3 criteria for exit from the SLAM Process before you raise your CYA. Another day or two at SLAM FC is cheap insurance.

Thanks for the link MITBeta as it had been a while since I reviewed the process. It’s always good to get a refresher. I’ve attached my latest tests. Water is clear but I still have some CC to clear up before I can do the OCLT.

Be sure the SWG is off BEFORE starting the Overnight Chlorine Loss Test
We usually recommend the SWG is not used during the entire SLAM Process so you get a better indication of chlorine loss.

OCLT showed 0ppm change so I'm finally done (the SWG was off). Now I need to wait for the FC to float back down and tune the SWG.

The pro move is to leave it in SLAM for another day. Or at least a very elevated FC level. Its one of those, just to be sure they are all dead.

Then test often, keep FC hot and life will be good.

Thanks, dude. Timely advice. I noticed some mustard algae starting to form in the cracks as the FC fell below 15 so up to 26 it went.

Unfortunately, 6” of rain fell in the last 48 hours. We’ll see what the levels look like tomorrow after I waste a ton of water.

Welcome to Florida. Keep your FC elevated. I would also run you pump during heavy rains helps mix the water.

Also take advantage of the rain its iron free, and CH free water. You can always add more chemicals, removing them is hard.

Ask the folks in Arizona if they would like 6” of rainwater in their pools.
