I can definitely attest to something happening to CYA over the winter. Mines drops to 0 every year and each spring my pool will eat bleach like crazy for a couple days and then level out to normal. Through reading here I have found that it is ammonia that I've had for the last 2 winters. Pool water will be clear just 0 CYA and huge chlorine appetite.
