Why does my pump never finish priming?

Hmm, but then the thread title won't give people the right idea of my new questions. People skimming the thread list will see an unrelated title with a bunch of comments and figure there's nothing they can add. Right?
 
Edit the title. Much of what you went through is relevant to future questions.

If you wish, start a new thread, but if it is about pumps, etc, it will be merged with this one.
