Why Did My Skimmer Crack?

I am confused. Just discovered skimmer socks yesterday (I asked the guy at Leslie's on a whim if they had such a thing), bought a pack of five, installed one which I have emptied four times since installing it yesterday afternoon. While I am certain it is meant to be installed on my skimmer basket, I, instead, elected to install it on the floating element (that insert piece that increases the surface straining effect of the skimmer). The sock, therefore, hangs from this insert. I have emptied it four times in the last 12 hours. Seems to be working well. I am totally confused as to how this would cause any component of my pool filtration system to crack. I am not challenging posts describing such damage, just curious to know more from those who have experienced this.
Thanks.

Hello and welcome to TFP! First, you'll notice I moved your first post to your own thread simply because your situation is a little different than the others from last year, and we want you to get 100% attention on your issue.

So to make sure we understand ... are you saying you believe one of the skimmer socks, used with this floating element product, may be responsible for damaging your poolside skimmer?

c,

A picture would be great because I suspect most of us have no clue what this "floating element" is....

Or maybe it is just me.. :p

Thanks,

I think he has a fox brand or similar skimmer & put the sock on the floating weir. The floating weir looks like a 5”” pipe with a foam collar, to keep it up. I can see a clogged sock turning it into a pile driver, under suction.

What was actually damaged?

I know this is now a rather old thread, and, I don't remember exactly the thread to which I was replying, but, for any wtill interested, no part of my skimmer cracked. I don't remember what caused me to post about my skimmer socks. I didn't cover my pool last winter (or the past four or five), so in April, when I start it up, there is much clean-up for me and my pool filter to accomplish. I tried those socks on a whim. I think they actually did save me a backwash or two, but, in the end, I found them to be more trouble than they were worth to me.

As always, the pool cleaned up fine, and we enjoyed a wonderful summer of swimming.

My pool is an Anthony, 25k gallons. It has just one skimmer with a basket into which you insert what I called a "floating element." I searched on the term 'floating wier', and that is exactly what I have. I used to have a door, but the part to which it fastened broke off. Although I had that door, I have always also had the floating wier, and it works just fine. Nothing cracked, so, I don't know why I even responded to the original thread. There must be a reason, but I can't remember.

Thanks for the warm welcome.
