Who's actually had plaster crack due to umbrella sleeves?

I've read quite a few comments about potential cracking issues with umbrella sleeves, but I haven't read any first hand accounts or seen pictures of plaster cracking due to umbrella sleeves.

It almost seems just as easy to put the sleeves in the decking around the pool if it is an issue... but it would be nicer to have them in the pool.

Thanks!

We did ours around the decking and we really like it. I didn't want to hassle with losing the cap and crud getting into it, or banging into/around the umbrella when the kids were playing. Also, most umbrellas aren't made for submersion and they'll rust or swell.

We did one near the shamu/sundeck and the other two equidistant and symmetrical across the middle of the pool - then they can be for an umbrella or a volleyball net etc. The multiple locations gave us variety of shade and were easy to add to concrete before the pour with rebar stakes.

Never seen them crack. The only thing I can imagine may cause cracking would be an over-excized install (gunite slot/hole too big for the sleeve and then mostly packed with plaster) and a lot of repetitive stress on it with a lot of leverage. But I'd imagine this is very rare. We have hundreds of sundecks with the sleeves at AirBnbs and the umbrellas get left in 40mph winds very often. Worst thing we've seen happen are 3 of these umbrellas go through windows... the rest just snap in half or go put holes in other stuff like fences, furniture and tables. Plaster couldn't care less. ;)

I appreciate your response!

I had not heard of it, but deducted from mine after watching it rack in the tube in high wind that the possibility exists at some point of use. I just don't leave it set up, and when the wind kicks up, I take it down.

Never used the one we have in the pool in all the ten years of ownership. It’s had the cap on it since Day 1 (would be pretty funny to open it and see if anything has grown in there). Pretty pointless in my opinion but I use the sleeves in my deck all the time. If we ever did a major pool remodel, I would have it chipped out or cemented over and covered with plaster. If a pool needs shade, then design it with piers and posts to hold a high quality shade sail or build a lanai over part of the pool. I wish we had done a shade sail for my pool.
