Is this the plastic exterior degrading? Is there a danger of my pump body shattering? It is 16 years old, and next on my replacement list, probably next season. It is the original single speed pump, so I'm definitely planning on upgrading to the variable speed option.

Given you have a SWG, my guess is that it is just dried up salt. Pump housings will usually last a very long time. About the only failure I have seen is a crack somewhere but nothing catastrophic.

And that thought completely slipped my mind. That makes perfect sense, Thanks!!!
