Liquid Chlorine
Hello. I am a newbie, although I have read many articles. This is my first time owning a pool that stays up year round. Last Summer it had a bad algae problem so I drained and cleaned then refilled.
This year, also had algae. Have been trying to get it clean with various chemicals but now that I have the TF-100 Kit, I am using total liquid chlorine.
We drained half of the pool and refilled it according to the directions on Pool math. The pool water is still white and cloudy.
Here are my test results:
8.5 FC
2 CC
10.5 TC
50 CYA
80 TA
PH was at 7.2 3 days ago

Do I need to do any other testing? What do I need to do to get it clear? We keep the filter on 24/7. See my signature for more pool information. Thank you.

Agreed. You've got an algae problem, as you know, and you need to SLAM the pool. If the water is white and cloudy, the algae is very significant and it will take days. No promise that it won't be a week or more. The algae has been happily multiplying. Time to stop it in its tracks.

Thank you. I will read up again about the slam process. I don’t understand it very well.
Read the article a few times. It's important to maintain SLAM FC level the best you can. You should test and increase FC to SLAM level using liquid chlorine at least three times per day. FC loss is accelerated during the day. You'll get a good feeling for how often to test after the first day. Brush at least once per day. Clean your filter when pressure increases 25% over clean level.

So when it says SLAM level of 20, is that the CYA level or the FC level.
Do I add liquid chlorine 3x’s a day until it reaches 20ppm?
What levels does CYA and FC need to be in order to know when to stop the SLAM process?
I had the SLAM article printed out and highlighted but was still confused. Thank you for your patience and help. I know that you get a lot of posts on here.

Your FC level is 20 ppm. Make sure pH is range (7.2-75) as the pH test is invalid when FC is 10 ppm and above.

When you decide to start the SLAM, test FC and add enough liquid chlorine to increase to 20 ppm. The goal is to maintain this level. As FC drops, you want to increase again to 20 ppm. Continue this cycle until your water is clear. When you think you're close, do an Overnight Chlorine Loss Test. If you pass and the water is clear, you are done.

I know it sounds confusing now, but it becomes intuitive as you go through the process.

With a CYA of 50, your FC level during SLAM should be 20

How often can you check your FC? It's recommended during SLAM to get out there about every 2 hours... and raise the FC back to SLAM level.

Example:
9 AM - FC is 20
11 AM - FC is 16... dose with enough Liquid Chlorine to get back to FC 20
1 PM - FC is 18... dose with enough liquid chlorine to get back to 20

You'll want to test your FC first. Chances are you've lost a bit since yesterday.

In Pool Math, click on the FC tab. Make sure pool volume is correct. Enter Current FC, Current CYA, and check the SLAM box. You'll get the Target FC level and 20 ppm and the Recommendation for amount to add. In the example below, the LC strength 10%.
