White film on sides - algae, calcium or bacteria?

You are better off letting the sand filter get dirty and thus be able to filter out fine solids. That is what the DE adding does.

Ok thanks for the advice. I'll do that
I did have an incident the other day which did not help at all.
I installed a vacuum relief valve for the solar collectors as it was missing during the installation done last summer.
After installing it and the pump turned off it worked very well but as the pump did not have a non-return valve some of the water got pushed back through the filter and emptied all the white stuff back into the pool (plus some backwash from the solar collectors cleaned them out).
1 step forward - 2 steps back.

Non-return valve installed on Sunday after that incident.
