Which SWG to get.....total newbie here:)

Ok so we have a 20 x 45 x 36 L shaped pool in the planning stages and I’m trying to figure out which SWG to get. I’m getting the kit from discount pool and they offer the Hayward Acu rite. But I’m not sure that’s big enough. I think my pool is 45k gallons and they’re largest system says 40k. Also, when people say automation in reference to salt systems, what are they referring to?

Welcome to TFP!

40k is not enough for a pool your size, you might need to run it 24 hours a day in the summer and even supplement depending on your FC demand. I'd suggest the circupools RJ 60 or RJ 60 plus for a pool that large (they are rated to produce more chlorine than any others I've seen and forum members seem to like them). You can compare here

Automation is when you purchase integrated systems (pump, SWCG, automation panel) from one manufacturer and they all talk/control each other. Pentair, Hayward, and Jandy are the major manufacturers. You then can add light control, automated valves for water features, spas, heaters, etc. You can also have wireless control via the internet.

You have a very large volume pool for the residential market. So SWCG use will be required to run for very long run times. I would, in any case, highly suggest a variable speed pump. You will save a lot on electricity cost as your pump (even with a 60K rated SWCG) will need to run 12++ hours per day in the summer to generate the chlorine you will need.

I like the sound of the rj 60....does that have automation.....and what is automation again lol

The Pentair IC 60 would probably one of the largest I seen that can be integrated with mainstream automation. It's not rated to produce as much chlorine as the RJ series but it is certified by 3rd party (NSF) and the circupool SWGs are based on the manufacturer rating only. I haven't seen anyone actually test them side by side yet.

I don't have automation but I can't see it really having an impact on my SWG. I modify my SWG if my pool gets over or under chlorinated, I don't change it often but I'd only do that when I was outside testing the pool anyway.... If you want automation they always mention staying with 1 brand as already stated. and getting a variable speed pump would be a really good idea either way.

Yes I’m going with the Hayward EchoStar variable pump. As far as the automation goes, I don’t care about controlling lights or anything. I won’t have any water features. I would just like my SWG to make taking care of my pool as easy as possible.

I think having a SWG by itself makes taking care of a pool as easy as possible, once you dial it in. Testing your water with the proper test kit is really the key there. There's a calculator that can help, but every pool is different and will change as the season does. There is no "automation" for testing, so you really have to learn that part then everything else falls in line.

If you are going with Hayward on the pump then Hayward automation would not control anything but a Hayward SWG which I've never seen one higher rated than 40K except some big industrial one for 4K. (I think my Hayward is awesome but that 40K limitation with your size pool is mot recommended). So given that, the RJ60 is a good option (for low price). That site is selling everything on promo, you get the SWG below the one you want (RJ 45)and choose $1 upgrade ($999 effectively for RJ60).

If you ever bought Hayward automation, I honestly cant see what's preventing connecting an SWG and running it off a timed function on the Hayward automation. Yeh I know, you cant adjust it from your phone and all that, but it can manage the pool. My SWG goes weeks and weeks on the same setting.

For your sized pool, I would suggest 2 40k units run in parallel. Twice the cost of course but I think you will save by running your pump much less. You could even go to 60k units in parallel.
