Where to install SWG

Installing Hayward T940. I have never used the inline tab chlorinator, so I am fine to just leave it. In the pictures, the red is the return to the spa jets, only used in spa mode. Green is spa spillover, only used in pool mode. Questions:

1. Since I have never and will never use the inline chlorinator, can I install the SWG immediately after the heater, and get rid of the yellow check valve? Since I am not using the in-line chlorinator, I do not need a check valve there, correct?

2. If I can indeed install it immediately after the heater, does that mean that I will be producing salt when I am in spa mode? If yes, is that OK? Or, will my Hayward PL–PS–8 know to not turn on SWG when in spa mode?

It does need to be installed in a location where it will always get flow if the pump is running, so that means you can't just cut out the existing chlorinator and put it there.
The location of the check valve would be fine, and the fact that heater has union connections will make the task a lot easier.
I would expect that your automation will allow you to set a different percentage for the SWG when the system is in SPA mode, so you can set it not not generate when in SPA mode. (Jandy automation has this feature, perhaps someone familiar with Hayward will chime in).

You do not need the check valve on the heater output. But I recommend you install a Heater Bypass - Further Reading which uses a check valve while you are working in that area.

Your ProLogic system will give you SWG % settings for POOL and SPA.

There are divided opinions on whether a check valve is needed between SWCG and heater. My SWCG manual says yes. The chemistry experts here mostly say no.

If your equipment is still under warranty then you may need the check valve just because they will blame all and everything on the SWCG eventhough we know that it's not needed but it's only needed if you were to use tab feeder.
The best place is for it after the heater. Not sure if a vertical installation kit has room in the line before the actuator valve, you may have to be creative and change the pipe configuration where it exits the heater.

You are the poster child for all those who worry that when installing a SWG their “salt pool” will be different and damaging to their pool.

Ha I know right. PB told me not to convert to salt because it would eat up my flagstone. So…I guess I need to convert to salt, to SAVE the flagstone!!!

Your flagstone will be better off being a salt water pool (swcg)

Oh boy. Feel stuuuupid!!! I used a 25ml sample omggggggg!!!!! Real number is therefore 2000pm. Apologies to PBs worldwide for disparaging comment above haha.

They still deserve it. And then some. Plus, given more time your salt levels likely would have risen anyway.

What tweaks my melons about all the saltphobes is that nobody EVER checks their salt level with LC or tabs, but call it a salt pool and everyone in TX loses their minds.

In your case, the entire argument against going salt is that 5.7% of seawater salinity (and rising) is entirely fine but 10% is the devil.

Jokes aside, Taylor calls their vial a 25ml vial and that's where the confusion comes in. All our brains shut off at 'fill 25ml vial' and miss the 'to 10ml' part.

Every one of us has made that mistake one time so that just proves you're a member but 2000 is up there too without knowing it.

Did the same thing my first sample. Oops. But I was at 2400 anyway so I was a salt pool before the swcg conversion.

Note also that the endpoint for the salt test differs from other titration tests...

Do not add enough R-0718 Silver Nitrate Reagent to give a brown color. First change (that holds) from yellow to a milky salmon (brick red) is the endpoint.

I Went to pinch a penny like a year and a half ago. I asked for a salt test to be performed. The guy asked me do you have a saltwater pool? I said no. He then said well then you don’t have any salt. I said yes I understand but do me a favor and perform the test anyway. He then told me I had 700 ppm of salt and I just smiled.

In any case, I’ll be draining the entire pool after doing an ascorbic acid treatment here in the next week or so. I will convert to salt after I refill.

I tested mine last week and I was at 1100 ppm. This is 1.5 years of using LC (and MA). Still trying to convince the wife to go to SWG. I guess I'll make her add LC everyday in the summer .

Why does your wife care is you use a SWG instead of LC?

I talked about it in another thread, sorry to those that read it already. She has been against "salt water", due to the notion that it could damage the natural stone around the pool. Her former boss has flagstone, and claimed the "salt water" damaged the stone.

I should be in the 2000+ ppm range next year, so it the conversion will happen at some point. I just have to deal with daily dosing this summer.

Wait another year and you can tell your wife you are going to use a SWG and not add any more salt to the pool.

My Mrs and 2 daughters found the SWG pool made their hair much less knotty after long swims. When using friends pools all the time prior, we needed 'swimmers shampoo' to help untangle them.
