When to shock pool

Where I live we are experiencing some hot temperatures and I remember reading somewhere that you should shock your pool when it’s hot out or after a big rain storm. How true is this?

We just got over a green pool that turned to blue cloudy and I’m trying to avoid getting back to that. I just tested the water and the chlorine is low and pH is good. Should I shock or add chlorine if we are having hot temps?

You should always be maintaining enough FC that no matter when you test you are within range. If that means you need to overshoot the top of your target range for you CYA, then do so.

What is your current CYA?

"Shocking" isn't necessary with TFP methodology. If you haven't taken the time already, be sure to read through our Pool Care Basics.

How are you testing? It's important to be using a quality test kit - either the Taylor K-2006C or the TFTestKits.net TF-100/TF Pro.

How are you currently chlorinating?

Thanks, I’ll be sure to read up on that. I currently have a HDX test kit from Home Depot, I know I should get a Taylor one 😬. We recently switched from tabs to liquid chlorine.
