When to run sheer descents?

Brrr, in the midst of a cold snap in DFW. Well, I guess that statement is relative;).

We have freeze protection on our pool, the main pump kicks on when the temp dips to 38 degrees. I have been turning on the sheer scents on by hand when the temp dips. Are they supposed to run at a certain temp too? Is there a change to our automation to be made to include this? Salt hasn't been added yet. It will be later this week.

Also, tested using my new TF-100 kit yesterday. CYA and TA are both very low. Will PB add and adjust those when salt is added this week?

CSI -1.11 I know this is low too. Is this a concern to address before they come out?
 
I would take care of the TA yesterday as that can really mess up your plaster if allowed to stay there. Here is a link for what we use to work on each level: Trouble Free Pool

The other stuff can wait. Your SWG won't work in water lower than 60 or so degrees (each one is different) so you don't really need to worry about adding salt yet.

I would not assume they are going to add anything. I am willing to bet they will not add any CYA. Instead they will tell you to use tablets/pucks. These add CYA S.L.O.W.L.Y. Once your area starts getting warmer you will want to get the CYA up to help protect your FC from the sun.

Sheers and any other things that have pipes with water in them-run them if there is any danger of a hard freeze. Other than that you should run everything at least once a day for about 15 mins or so to keep the water fresh in the lines.

You can also get CYA at Lowes and Walmart. I will let you do the price check for your area.

When you go to add the CYA do NOT pour it in the skimmer like the directions say. Here at TFP we have done many experiments to see what is the best way. We found that putting the CYA in a sock (yeah like you wear) and hanging it from a pole or such in front of a return works the best. This allows it to get right into the water with out clogging anything up or not dissolving all of the way. Some people put the sock in their skimmer. That is okay so long as you make sure it does not block the flow of water and you leave the pump on until it is all dissolved. You can and should squeeze the sock to help it dissolve. It will make a white cloud when you squeeze it.

You can and should add the sheer descents into your iAqualink as part of the freeze protect program. When freeze protect activates, anything in the program will turn on like the sheer descents. This assumes your sheer descent valve is electric (JVA).

Did you use 25ml sample on TA, I'd retest very unlikely you have 7.4 pH and 20 TA

Everything should be on during freezing weather.

You may want to turn down your freeze protect trip temperature to 33 or 34 (or 32 but 33 or 34 allows for some degree of error in the temp sensor). Water has never frozen at 38 degrees. Just a thought if you want to have things running a bit less. Set your timers for your minimum runtime during the midnight to 6am timeframe and then some of your freeze protect running will coincide with your "keeping the pipes fresh" runtime.
