What's the procedure to follow to open a salt pool?

The opening process is explained fairly well on the TFP Pool School - Opening Your Winterized Above Ground Pool page. Remember if your water is still chilly (below 60) the SWG probably won't produce FC very well, so have some regular bleach on hand just in case. The instructions cover just about everything you asked, but if you have any other questions about opening let us know.

Also, as a first time pool owner, please make sure to be very familiar with the vital links below in my signature, and also review the TFP ABCs of Pool Water Chemistry.

Nope. Same as a regular pool. First get some good test readings from a good test kit like the TF-100 or Taylor K-2006C. If any algae present you need to SLAM with liquid chlorine. A SWG cannot clear a green pool by itself.

Even if pool is sparkling clear, use liquid chlorine to get FC up before using SWG.

Same as a regular pool. No difference to open a salt pool (except for the recommended chemical levels-see link in my signature). You still need to shock it if/when necessary. As far as switching on the salt chlorinator before adjusting all chemicals levels...I'll leave that questions opened for others. I don't have an SWG pool, so I'm not sure if you really need to do that.

I am a first time salt pool owner, I used to have a regular pool. I just wonder if there is any difference to open a salt pool. Do I still need to shock it? Should I switch on the salt chlorinator before I adjust all the chemical level or after?

thank you very much.

People ever told me that the water would be clear when I open in summer if it is SWCG. However I don't see any difference between SWCG and how it used to be before. It is a swamp when I opened yesterday. I just wonder if that's true that the water should be clear if it is SW, or did I miss anything last year when I closed it?

thank you.

SWG or not, it's all about the closing process. Not just chemicals and how it's done, but the timing as well. We try to close as late as possible in the year, and open as soon as we can the next to reduce the dormancy period. Regardless, it's not uncommon for owners to SLAM Process their pool upon opening. So if you have any concerns about that process, let us know.

I'd agree with Texas above. This year I opened our SWG pool and it was clear and even 5 FC left in the water after opening. I closed late (my son wanted a pool party for his Sept birthday) so the water was chilly at close. It certainly made opening a breeze. I followed the closing directions for the most part in Pool School (didn't use antifreeze for example). How did you close last season?
