What's going on here? White crust outside pump.

2020. Salt Pool around 50,000 Gallons, Fiberglass.

The pump is a Pentair Superflo VS.

I'm thinking it's a seal that needs to be replaced. There is a little bit of water on the ground. It's a very slow leak it would seem.

There seems to be either calcium or salt on the outside of the actual pump. The CEL was complaining last week of not having enough salt. The red light said "Add Salt" so we added 1 40lb bag of salt, spread it in the shallow end and all was well until I noticed this buildup today. See pictures.

The chemistry seems fine. We've not used the pool much this summer and it's been covered for a lot of the summer. It's a thick auto cover.

*Trying to think of all things that are useful for this troubleshooting.

Any ideas on this. I've never seen the buildup on the outside like this.

Thanks,

Welcome to TFP! With a water leak, it's common to see signs of corrosion along the pump body, although it also looks like dried salt as well. Regardless, you have either a leaking shaft seal or seal plate seal. You can shop for a "Go-Kit" which is basically a seal kit for that make/model pump that should have everything in it you require.

You know what ... hang tight. After looking some more, I want to tag @1poolman1 and @JamesW because I seem to recall some of those models leaking at the control unit above. That might be your issue.

Let's make sure. Stand by .................

Correct.

Go-kit here:

The shaft seal in the go kit is ok. I would get a US Seal PS-1908....way better service for a salt pool. Keep the shaft seal from the go-kit for backup.

Perfect! Thank you all.

It doesn't seem to be a disaster just yet.....

Now I need to learn how to install it but it seems pretty straight forward with 4 bolts.

At least I don't need a torque wrench! I'm decently handy with most things but pool mechanics is all new to me.

Before you order the go-kit though, let's give one of the two experts I tagged above a chance to review. I just want to make sure the control board seal isn't part of the problem.

For sure. I'm not going to touch it until this weekend. I appreciate the help so far.

I'll also post what I'm planning to buy before I buy it because I'm not 100% confident just yet.

The video is the old style.

Oh boy.... Starting to get a lot more complicated than I initially thought it was going to be. I also wanted to only open it once, rather than opening it and then ordering the parts.

Would it make sense to get a "Go-Kit" first as mentioned by "PoolStored", learn how to disassemble / reassemble and then after having it apart (knowing EXACT) part numbers and finally ordering the proper seals for the next failure?

Also how important are the torque specs? I literally just got rid of my torque wrench last summer.

You probably have the new style, but I would pop it open and check to be sure.

It's not that hard; just remove the screws as shown in the video and pull the assembly back.

Check the part numbers stamped on the impeller, diffuser and seal plate.
