What to do after vacuuming floc into Perflex DE Filter

My son has been trying to open his pool for the first time and used floc and then vacuumed into his Hayward DE perflex filter. Is there anything that can be done to "recover" the filter or is it a lost cause?

I found the recommendations to vacuum to waste on here but how does one do that without losing a significant amount of water?

You're going to lose water regardless when you vacuum on waste. You can wait until after a heavy rain, or add water to raise the pool level then vacuum.

To not lose as much water, you can just use the vacuum hose itself and create a siphon effect by placing hose in front of the jet to remove air in hose, then hook up to vacuum, throw other end of hose outside the pool and vacuum slowly. It doesn't draw as much water as the pump does, if that makes sense.

As for the filter, I don't know. You should at least set to "rinse" and rinse it out for a few minutes.

Wanted to provide a quick update. We vacuumed to waste last night by syphoning and it went amazingly well. He had already topped off with excess water and the vacuuming of his 19,000 gallon pool took about an hour. We cleaned each of the preflex fingers indivdually and reinstalled. Pool looked pretty good this morning with just a little cleanup needed so he is planning vacuuming to waste one more time and will then start the filter. His test kit arrives tomorrow so hopefully he will be up and running with good chemistry for the weekend.
