What is this?

I have noticed this inlet or outlet on my sand filter. I was hoping that it was an easy way to hook up an air compressor, but no luck. The black ridged cover unscrews with an attached plug, but there are not any fittings on the filter side. When I open it up water comes out.

What is this port? Is this for blowing out the filter and system? If so, what type of fitting do I need?

It's the manual air relief valve.

Thanks for the link-not original pool owners and I do not have the manual. So it is to bleed air out on initial startup. Not what I was looking for, but helpful regardless.
