What is this? Maybe a sensor?

I am painting my pvc and when I started to remove this it started making a weird noise so I tightened it back up. It leads to the roof so maybe a sensor?

It is a temperature sensor.

You have 3 temperature sensors.
1) Water.
2) Air.
3) Solar.

Can it be removed as it seems starts making a noise when I put pressure to remove?

They will often crack and expand inside the pipe.. When that happens, it takes a little extra effort to take them out.

I would not pull it out until you have another one to replace it.

It looks like the pipe is already painted black.

Why do you want to paint it again?

If you do paint, just leave the sensor in place and paint around it.

Tape over it with masking tape.

As noted, do not remove without a spare to replace it as it will likely break on removal.
