What is the bottom handle that broke off supposed to be for?

You either have two skimmers, or a skimmer and main drain. That handle controls where the water comes from...
I only have one skimmer. Can you do into more depth about the handle controlling where the water comes from? Is it like water going from the pool to the skimmer vs the water going from the pool to the main drain?

It is the suction side of the pump. One side comes FROM the skimmer, the other comes FROM the main drain.
