What is happening in my pool right now? Suggestions welcome!

Central Texas here, outside of Austin. Pool is 27,000 gallons and 9' deep at one end.

I've got a pool guy, he's a retired guy and keeps things touched up. He's been pretty good but realistically he isn't an industry guy or anything.

Apparently the chemicals are good, I don't know any numbers off hand, but he's coming tomorrow and I can get any info then.

A month ago the water's crystal clear, I've got a cartage filter, just replaced the cartridges. Have one of those robot deals that scrapes the bottom, and my wife's out there daily with her OCD cleaning anythign that may have gotten in there. So it's rather well taken care or.

Then it started getting cloudy, and then worse. The sides and steps look like there's a yellowish dust on them. If I rub it it comes right off. What the heck is happening here? I have to think it's an algae of some sort because it's getting worse over time.

Wife has tried adding clarifier and added this Pool RX thing a few days ago that looks like a gimmick.

So what's gonig on here, can y'all help me turn this around?

Most likely you have algae. Although your pool guy likely has good intentions, he probably doesn't have the proper tools or training to take care of your pool.

First things first, remove the Pool RX. No good can come of it, and it will add copper to your pool. Invest in a TFP recommended test kit (Test Kits Compared). The test kits from TFtestkits.net offer the best value. There's really no shortcut to this step. Spend some time in pool school. This is a good set of Articles to get you started.

Welcome to TFP Evil! We're not too big on pool guys here and the same can be said about pool stores and their potions they want you to jack up your pool with, i.e. clarifiers and PoolRX. We recommend you take control of your pool with a solid test kit -> Test Kits Compared and do your own testing. How are you sanitizing your pool, i.e. liquid chlorine (LC), salt water generator (SWG), etc.? That will help us get you going. In the meantime, the cloudiness is likely an algae bloom setting in and it needs to be remedied quickly before it gets out of hand. I'd recommend, based on your pool size, 172 oz of liquid chlorine (10%) or 137 oz of liquid chlorine (12.5%) every day until your test kit that you'll be ordering arrives. This will at least slow down the algae bloom.

Thank y'all, sorry I didn't pop back in earlier! We decided to up the chlorine for a couple of days to kill everything, I was left with a very cloudy white pool. That made me realize we had an issue with the filters.

Turns out my wife changed the cartridges a couple weeks prior and didn't put the cap back on correctly, so essentially it was bypassing the filters!

Fixed all that and let it run for a couple of days, cleaning the filters every 12 hours, and it's back to sparkling blue like normal.

Appreciate the advice!
