What exactly is closing?

New pool owner here! For reference, we purchased our new home in August and are located in Pearland TX. We have a 13,500gal pool and I’ve been learning pretty well about the pool chemistry and whatnot. I keep reading about “closing” the pool in the winter and admittedly I have no clue what this even means! Is this something I should be doing in my location and... WHAT IS IT??

Most of us in Texas don't actually close our pool. It just doesn't get cold enough to warrant taking those actions as you see in the article below. Keep the water moving and focus on the FC and pH each week and you should be fine. If we have one of those unusually hard freezes like in 2017 or 2021, keep the water moving. Have a quick Plan B to drain water from equipment if you lose power during a freeze period.
