I think I’m on the right track—the only thing I’ve noticed is I think there may be some iron in the water as I’m getting slight orangish markings on the returns and steps - what should I do for this

Try using crushed up vitamin C tablets in a nylon or thin sock. Rub it all over the plastic parts to help lift the iron stains then clean off any remaining marks with a Magic Eraser.

Vitamin C will lift it off fittings but you probably want it gone from the water.

Try some polyfill aka quilt stuffing in your skimmer. If you use a hair net, put the fill under it.
