Duncan, Ok
I know I’m getting a late start but here we go. Had to make some big repairs to my pump and filter. Now that I’ve got to the end of that rabbit hole I can start the SLAM. Still got a small air leak somewhere but I’ll get to that another day. Got the Ph to 7.2 and poolmath said 3 gallons of bleach.
Day 1

Also, anyone scared about doing the SLAM process, fear not. If I can do it anyone can. You just have to adhere to the rules closely and be PATIENT! Brush and vacuum a couple times daily. Then set out on the patio with your favorite cold brew, test your water and add bleach accordingly.

Yes I’ve done it 1 other time 2 summers ago and it was a breeze. Was out of town and out of the country too much last year to justify opening the pool. Didn’t want to fight green water every time I got back home.

If y’all have an Atwood’s they have the best prices on bleach. 10% gallon jugs for $1.99 and worth the hour long drive to get it. I fill up my truck bed with as many cases as it will hold. The lady asks what I’m doing with it and I use the old “it cleans up blood the best after I hide the bodies.” Seems to always generate a priceless look from the cashier and speeds them up too lol.

When I try and vacuum this brown stuff shoots out. The filter setting was on filter
Any suggestions?
That's not good.

Maybe the sand is channeled. Worse case is you have a broken or cracked lateral in the filter. Either way, the filter's not filtering like it should be. It;'s supposed to catch that stuff.

I am burning through a lot of chlorine. Apparently I forgot to check my cya before I started and did today and it wasn’t registering on my test kit. K2006
So I added some today and probably at a lost cause because of the vacuuming and back washing but I tried. ?‍♂️
Also I had a lot left over from last year stores in my shop building so it may be worthless. I’m going to get a truck load this weekend.

Day 3 and it doesn’t seem like much progress has been made but I got a bunch of junk and debri off the bottom yesterday which caused all that dark junk to be stirred up.

**Edit**. Tested Fc and I only went down 5ppm where as the last two days I went from 12 to 1 overnight. So that’s good news.

Don't get disheartened. You're using turbidity as the test, much like the CYA test. And you can see how close together the higher numbers are there. No different, here. You might have started at 100 and now you're at 70 and it doesn't look like much has changed. But the next 30 reduction will be hugely different.

Well I think I’m in for major improvements in the next 48 hrs. Had a very successful vacuuming session this evening. Vacuumed for a couple hours and got a bunch of junk and leaves out. Also chlorine is holding stronger. Still got a long road ahead but making progress sure feels good.
