Solar covers stop heat loss due to evaporation. Most people understand evaporation occurs both at night AND day.

Leaving the cover on during the day stops evaporative heat loss during the day so the pool heats up more than if the cover was off.

That's why it is recommended to leave the cover on during the day for maximum heat gain.
