Waxahachie, TX Owner Build - A race to beat the baby!

Throughout the process I've become more confident in speaking up, so that was helpful today. It seems like they listened to my request for as dry a mix as possible for the gunite, but inexplicably to me at the end when they did the floor, they started using a lot of water. I asked about it and they said it was necessary for them to "flash" the floor this way. It was pretty wet looking and the guys had to work backwards out of the pool to cover up their sloppy footprints in the wet gunite. The guy made it sound like this is how they always do it, and it was necessary to do it this way. I was skeptical based on what Brian had posted, but there wasn't much I could do about it. I just hope it doesn't cause me any problems with the shell.

Pure Laziness. More water makes the mix much less "stiff" and if enough is added will nearly self level. This will more than likely not cause an issue whatsoever, but whoever told you that was giving you a line.

Thanks for chiming in, Brian. That's what I thought, but as I said, by the time they started doing that, there wasn't much I could do. As I told my husband, you can give these guys all the instructions you want, but it's hard to stop them from "going rogue" on you if they decide to! I hope you're right that I won't have any problems. Watering starts today!

NICE Job Jamie! You go girl!

So nice they were willing to listen to you.

Cash talks big! SWEET! Every little bit helps!

Kim

Yes, it is nice to save a little here and there. Too bad they didn't listen to me at the end. Oh well, hopefully it will be ok.

And now the pictures you've been waiting for (photobucket was cooperating this morning)

Proof that I fed the guys breakfast burritos:

Two photos of the end result:

Check out those tennis balls, Kim! ;-)

Looks good. How did the plumbing do?

Because of the overnight freeze I had drained the system, then they tarped over my equipment so I decided not to repressurize yesterday. I will do that this morning and hopefully all will be well.

Congratulations!!!!! The tennis balls are a great idea, wish I had thought of that at the time!

Thanks, but I can't take credit for the idea. I'm pretty sure it was Kim's, from way back. Safety first! We got 35 used balls on Craigslist for $10. Pretty good deal, I'd say. :)

From what I can tell, it looks like you got a quality job :thumleft:

Wow I am really impressed!

It must be so gratifying overseeing the build yourself! Honestly I wish I would have done an owner build. With as much time as I spent arguing and watching over everything my builder did I probably could have done it myself with a bunch less heart ache and also been done last year.

What is the rebar with the tennis balls for? Is that to tie in the decking?

Oh and did you get a rough electric so they could verify your ground wire is attached to the rebar?

Safety first! I am glad to see them! You and I both KNOW one of the kids would find a way to get hurt. NOW to keep your little one from using them to play with! LOL I hope you kept a few for them to play with!

That looks AWESOME! You will not have any problems with the wetter bottom I bet. It is how they do most of them so it should be fine!

I love the look of your pool! So much playing room!

Kim

Jamie, it looks beautiful!!! Great job!!!

Can you tell me about your your tanning ledge/shelf thing? I see the Suz/Helen steps... I like the look of the riser height. If it's not too much trouble, can you give me the dimensions you used starting with the first 1/2 circle step down all the way down to the steps? I'm thinking about changing my tanning ledge to having a small step onto a smaller bubbler area then down to a deeper area for more of a chair seat height water depth and then have the steps come off of that. It looks like you have done the same. I think my shelf dimensions currently are 6x6 or so with just one step down of 9" then the steps come off either side.

Thanks, Denise!

I'll give you the water depths for each, and then the dimensions.

The first step is 2" water depth. 17" front to back, 35" wide
Bubbler ledge: 9" water depth. 2' front to back from edge of first step. 10'2" wide
Shelf attached to bench: 16" water depth. 3' front to back from edge of bubbler shelf. 14'10" wide, from wall to wall
Stairs: 4 stairs, with 6" rises. 2' wide, 1.5' tread depth

The gunite guys worked off of the dimensions I had in my plan, then we tweaked things after discussing how it would turn out, both before and after they shaped these areas. When I had first designed the pool I had the large shelf area attached to the bench be 4' from front to back, but changed that even before we dug because we had shortened that leg of the pool and I didn't want to take up too much room. We don't plan on using the bench for loungers, but a chair might fit.

Just for reference, the radius for the circle that forms that part of the shallow end is 8', so at it's widest part, that part of the shallow end is 16'.

I hope that helps. Let me know if you need me to clarify anything.

I assume the 2'10" wide on the bubbler ledge is a typo? did you mean 12'10"? we might try something like this in ours. anyone got an ballpark figure for a minimum depth for a bubbler ledge to be usable for loungers? at least 6'?

Oops, good catch. Yes, that is a typo. I inverted the numbers. I fixed it above. It should actually read 10'2" wide.

Thanks for the specs, Jamie! That's perfect.

Any chance for a picture from the side right next to that area (looking directly at the steps and shelves from the side)?

So, your steps are 6 ft in length total and from the wall (start of first 1/2 circle step) to the end of the 2nd shelf is 6'5", making the total space 12ft 5in from the wall to the end of the final step.

I thought that looked wider than 2'10" :)

My PB told me the bubblers could not be deeper that 8, maybe 9 inches or the bubblers would not work right (be visible). But this puts the water depth to about ankle deep vs calf/knee depth for sitting in a chair.

Jamie, just curious, why 2 sleeves so close to each other?

For the bubbler depth, I had people tell me that I needed to go 6", but I'd seen builds here that had them at 9" and they were ok. I really wanted more depth, so that's what we went with. I hope it's ok.

For the umbrellas, I won't use both at the same time. But I was trying to estimate where I wanted shade during different parts of the day. When standing at the small step entering the pool and facing the shallow leg of the pool, we are facing north. So the sun travels from right to left across the ledge. In the earlier hours I'm hoping that the right sleeve will allow the umbrella to shade the left side of the ledge, and in the afternoon for the left sleeve's umbrella to shade the right. If I had only done one in the middle, I don't think I would have gotten the shade coverage I wanted. Hopefully I'll be right. It's hard to judge these things when the sun is in such a different place I the sky this time of year.
