Waterway sand filter - Removing the drain plug(?) without the drain cap

Okay. So I have another problem. I really appreciate y'all's help! I seem to have lost the drain cap with the hexagon on the other side when I closed the pool last fall. I know I can order a new one, but I'm trying to get all this old equipment out so I can put in the new pool and equipment.

Is there a other way to creatively remove the plug that's inside the drain hole? I've seen some people call it a lateral, but what I'm seeing online, laterals are different. So I'm just calling it the internal screw-in drain plug.

I think that's because the inside (long) part has slots like a lateral to allow water to drain out but not allow sand to pass out the drain.

Regardless, help me understand. If you lost the drain cap last year, how has it been plugged this season? Maybe post some pics?

Good question! Because the liner leaked all winter and we needed a new one before opening it for this summer. Well, when we removed the old liner, we discovered that the steel sides were rusted beyond use. So it wasn't in use this summer. We bought the new pool, and I'm just trying to get the old equipment out so I can set up the new stuff.

Well, I'm impatient, so I bit the bullet and spent the $7 on another cap. I figured the angst I'm saving myself will be well worth the few bucks.
