The speed stir not only makes it way simpler, and improves accuracy/consistency, but it's also backlit and you can see the drops falling into the vial if its dark. Jussayin.

It's the best $48 one can spend on their pool IMO. (Assumimg there already is a reliable test kit, of course).

Or bring the sample inside with or without the speed stir. You still WANT the speed stir tho.

Y'all, my pool is still so yellow and the FC is barely falling. Is anything happening? It has been around 24 hrs.

It's called POP (pool owners patience) slam isn't over just because you think it's done. Slam away till the water clears and all 3 criteria are met and don't expect 24 hours to be a major step. You need to be brushing minimum twice daily to get the yellow moving.

In case anyone cares, overnight the FC fell from 24 to 20.5. I was excited! Maybe a little difference in the cloudiness. I brushed, topped up chlorine, etc. my husband doesn't really trust this method yet so it was good to see a little progress to point to.

Make him scroll every last post in this thread and ask him if you guys should listen because it's all your helper's pools. Many started like yours, or even way worse.

Ok so my SLAM is still going, don't see any algae etc but here's my dilemma: I'm leaving town tomorrow for 5 days. My parents will be at my house. I hadnt obviously thought this through. I'm considering raising my pool to "mustard SLAM" levels until I leave and then let it fall while they are here. Maybe I'll teach my 11 YO to do the chlorine drop test and have my parents continue some amount of chlorine addition (although if we just let it fall while I'm gone it'll likely be ok?). I haven't done an OCLT again since the beginning, so I don't even actually know if I'm done w the first part of the SLAM. Just looking for some thoughts on how to manage the pool Thurs-Sun while I'm out and hopefully some encouragement that my SLAM hasn't been for naught since I won't be here to monitor.

If the pool looks clear & no recurring algae do the oclt tonight.
Have you been backwashing when psi rises 25% over clean pressure?

They can likely safely add 5ppm worth of fc each day,
What have your daily losses been like?

Have them add 5ppm per day of liquid chlorine. Resume Slam when you return.

5 ppm per day will be good, although possibly a little more than needed. I will order more liquid chlorine. I might ask my dad to pour in 1 gal chlorine per day and brush. I'll have my daughter or so report the daily chlorine level. Add an extra gallon if needed. (5 ppm per day is 2 gallons as our pool is approximately 40k gals)

I brushed again today and realized there's a small amount of "dust" when I brush the bottom so I need to keep at it. no more yellow

Ok so my pool looks fine after my 5 day trip, still very clear, just leaves to rake up. My family did not add chlorine except for one day...oh well. Chlorine was at 24 for the slam, and it has drifted to 10. I wanted to go back to the "is my SLAM done" question, specifically about "dirt" on the bottom of the pool. When i used to brush, there was a lot of yellow dust. Now there's a very small amount of gray dust. No yellow . Does the gray dust also completely die/filter with the SLAM?

If I stop now with the SLAM, as the season is almost over, what will be the implications? I may have to start a SLAM in the spring? Do people tend to SLAM at pool opening anyway? I guess I'm leaning towards maintaining a slightly higher than recommended chlorine level and then just revisiting everything in the spring.
