Very low CYA , can we just use pucks until it raises then switch back to liquid chlorine ?

Opened the pool 2 weeks ago and have it clear and not using more than 1 ppm of chlorine overnight . Did a CYA test and it’s gotta be 10 or so. The weather won’t be good enuff to use it for another week or 10 days . Wondering if we should run pucks for a week , or throw some cya powder in the sock and try and bring it up ?

I do this every year and when CYA hits 70 turn the SWG on. The Pool Math "effects of adding" is pretty accurate for CYA increase. A down side is that pucks are more expensive than CYA last time I looked.

trichlor is also acidic- this can bite you if you’re not careful about monitoring ph & ta.
Its fine to use them just beware of all the effects which you may or may not need.
For more than just a little cya bump I prefer to just use dry stabilizer. As mentioned above it is also cheaper.

Dang it …. I knew I screwed up . I thought since no one is swimming in it for a week or so and the chlorine levels are good , I could run 2 pucks ever couple days and raise it. Just bought a $60 bucket of pucks on Sunday and already opened it 😩🤦🏻‍♂️

Won’t hurt just beware of the effects.
Here’s what each dissolved puck will do (if 8oz.)

It will take a while to get up to swcg cya levels
Use the rest for vacations. They will last forever if kept dry

Yeah for my pool this is another plus along with saving SWG cell hours. Once I turn the SWG on, I need to add acid every 7 to 14 days. With pucks in a floater, it just glides along from November through April.

I just tested with my Taylor Kit and since yesterday we added 2 jugs liquid chlorine since the chlorine was at 2.8ppm.
After 24 hours of 2 pucks ,2 jugs , the chlorine has raised to 5 ppm . TC is basically nothing. The PH is 7.8 and the TA is still at a 100.
FC-5
TA- .5-1 ppm
PH 7.6-7.8
TA 100

I’m the opposite- my ph is usually rock solid. I got my ta down to 60 right after i filled the pool in April of 2019 and it hasn’t budged. Tabs throw a wrench in that stability so I have to be careful with them.
When my previous swcg’s were undersized I would use them in the dog days of summer to supplement fc and replenish cya a little but they bit me and I had to add soda for the first time ever. Thankfully I caught it but lesson learned!
The cost is null to me due to someone gifting me a huge bucket of them that will probably last me a lifetime.
