Hello,

I have a Flotec AT251001-01 1 HP 230V pump that is very loud. I would like to replace it with a variable speed pump. Which one do you recommend?

Also if you look into the piping in the picture below, it is tight to cut the pipe and have any remaining pipe to put the fittings for the pump. Is there any alternative like an adapter that wraps around the existing fitting, instead of the pipe? I would really like to avoid using heat to remove the pipe from the fitting.

Pool is about 18000 gal, 1 drain, 1 skimmer, 1 vacuum, 3 returns, 1 waterfall (3 x 18in wide). I normally have to shut down the returns to have enough pressure for the waterfall. I don't know the exact measurement, but the pump is fairly close to the pool. I would say probably 20ft from skimmer to pump. Main drain may be like 35ft away from pump. It looks to me like most pipes are 2in, except for the returns line which looks like 1 1/2, I have not measured them.

Thanks,

Daniel

Welcome to the forum! :handshake:

A standalone (no plans for automation) VS pump can be most anything. InyoPools has a private line or the gold standard in VS pumps is the Intelliflo VS 011018. For slightly less cost is the Pentair Superflo VS. If you plan to DIY, be aware Pentair only warranties for 60 days if DIY install. Some members have purchased extended warranties when purchasing the pumps via Amazon. No word on if any have submitted a claim.

VS pumps are really variable HP pumps, so do not be scared off by the higher hp ratings. You only run them as fast as you need to. You can also limit the highest rpm in the settings.

The VS pump is powered on full time. Each has its own scheduler/timer built in.

I suggest you read Pool School - ABCs of Pool Water Chemistry and consider reviewing the entire Trouble Free Pool School book.

@mknauss Thanks a lot for the response. Yes I've bee following TFP for a while, and glad to report that my pool has been running great with all the advice and chemistry is working fine. Really appreciate all the helpful information in here.

The Pentair SuperFlo VS is currently my top choice, also considering INYOpool's PureLine line of pumps. My concern is really a drop in replacement to minimize the amount of change for a DIY project. And tbe issue with the fittings in a tight space is what worries me.

Regarding the warranty, I think I'm ok with the 60 days. I think for these things it is either dead on the first few days or it will last for a while. If it dies within a few years, at least I saved on the install.

I would like to use unions to make future replacement effortless.

Your suction side plumbing looks challenging. Are the three way valves 2" or 1.5"?

You may find it easier to buy two new three way valves and replumb the suction from the ground up.
