Valve or No Valve?

Hello TFP Experts,
I will be replacing an old leaking DE filter with a cartridge filter. In ground pool approx. 38,000 gallons.
The piping into and exiting the filter also will be replaced due to differences in positioning and port size.
Current piping between the pump and DE filter inlet includes a Jandy valve normally open except during
backwashing.
For cleaning, the plan is to remove and hose down cartridges periodically and drain filter body as needed.
Existing valves in the supply and return lines would be closed. Would this be sufficient to isolate the filter
and allow a direct line from pump outlet to new filter inlet without a valve in between?
Thank you for reading and your advice.

HTM,

I like a valve between the pump and the filter.. This allows you to shut off the filter so that if you open the pump lid, the filter will not drain out of the pump lid, nor back through the return side to the pool..

You can also use a 3-way valve so that you can send water to waste rather than through the filter..

Thanks,

Jim R.

Jim - The pump lid will be opened now and then, for sure. Had overlooked that. Thank you for your helpful and practical reply.
Regarding the valve to use, would this be a good situation for a high quality ball valve (2" full port/true union)? I have a spare. Or just use another Jandy style diverter valve?
Thank you.

HTM,

If you have had good luck using ball valves then that will work just fine.

Down South, ball valves last about one season before they freeze up, never to be turned again...

That is why Jandy valve cost more... :)

Thanks,

Jim R.

Hello Jim - Good point. I was going to add that I'm also upgrading the return line to 2" and then ask whether the ball valve could be a good choice for keeping water from flowing back to the down hill pump. I think you've answered the question Thank you for sharing your experience!
