This may seem obvious but if my handle to the vacuum is broken and open to air will it stop the suction?
I tried to vacuum today with a broken handle and there was no suction. Then the pool pump stopped circulating after that too. I had to restart the pump for it to work again.

What type of vacuum are you using? If it's a manual vacuum like the one I use below, then no. The air never passes through the handle, only the vacuum head to the hose.

It is a manual one. Looks like I have to troubleshoot to see why it is losing suction. It was low on water yesterday so I added water. Can water level have something to do with that? I haven’t had a chance to check that yet. It’s already too hot for the babies to be out with me while I vacuum. Yay Texas heat wave.
An additional question is that My PSI is running around 2 now. Is that too low? The RPM is at 1750 so I can get the Polaris going and there seems to be great circulation. When I ran the vacuumed yesterday I chose the “quick clean” on the pump. The RPM for that is at 3450.
Thank you for always being so prompt with all your replies and not making me feel like an idiot.

Sure. Maybe later post some pics of your pool, equipment pad, and vacuum set-up. Maybe we'll something to help.

PSI varies for each pool and its plumbing. It will always look low if the rpm is low as well.
