Using flock

Do you have to vacuum to waste when using a flock? Where we live we have to have water delivered, so it's expensive and hassle. If I can minimize my water loss that would be great. I've seen a couple different answers to this question. Was wondering if I can vacuum then backwash? Thanks!!

Welcome to the forum!

Flocculant is rarely recommended. No matter what type filter you have, you must vacuum it to waste. It must be done several times with refill and settling allowed between each vacuum operation.

Lots of information on this forum to help you manage your pool and clear it from algae without pool store potions. Ask questions if you are interested.

Take care.

Yes, you do. You do not want that floc in your filter or else you will have more problems to deal with. The question we have to ask now is, why are you backwashing to waste with new water? Or did you already have a pond on your hands when opening this year?

By the way, welcome to TFP!

That's scary that you have seen different answers to that question. Yes, you 100% must vacuum to waste. Vacuuming through a cartridge filter can ruin the filter and vacuuming through a sand or DE filter can turn the media in to a brick.

One of many reasons we advocate against its use in most all cases.
