Used Floc whilst running the filter

Hi Everyone,

This is the first time I am maintaining a pool (12,000 gallons in size) and I got professionals to open up the pool this summer. But even after 3-4 days when the pool was cloudy then based on what I could read on the internet, I used Floc to get rid of it but I forgot to put my sand filter on recirculation mode (it ran for 2 hours on filtration). 24 hours later there were so signs of debris at the bottom of the pool and the water was as cloudy as before. Does that mean that all the floc got clogged up in the filter? What can I do to make the situation better?

I only have this house for this summers so any major expenditure wouldn't make sense for me.

I'm afraid so. Floc becomes a gummy substance and it will ruin sand. :( I would suggest trying to vacuum to waste any remaining sediment at the bottom of the pool then change the sand. After that, follow our SLAM Process to kill & remove algae. Cloudy water is one of the first signs of algae. Be sure to visit our Pool Care Basics and let us know if you have any other questions.

Welcome to TFP!

Is there any other way I can sort this out without changing sand? I read somewhere on TFP that floc will ultimately break down in a couple of days and reenter the pool and will make it cloudy. I can live with this but changing sand would be a big deal as I’ve only got it replaced 2 years ago

To my understanding the floc sticks and doesn't go anywhere. But you can try and let it go for a while. Give it time and let us know how it goes. At some point open your filter and examine the sand yourself to see how it looks and feel.

Update: pool has cleared completely and chemical level is also stabilised. But the filter keeps throwing dust into the pool which gets collected at the bottom of the pool. I have vacuumed it twice to waste but it seems never ending. Could it be floc coming back to the pool because filter is making the pool dirtier. If I attach socks to the inlet, would that help?

Yes I did the SLAM process and overnight chlorine test
So after review of this thread, we need to circle back and confirm the following:
- How are you testing your water?
- Can you post a full set of water test results?
- Did you change your sand after the floc circulated through it previously?
- Please update your signature with all of your pool and equipment info.
