Upgrade advice needed

Hello Everyone,



I am upgrading my pump, sand filter, and heater and I'm considering the following:



Pentair SuperFlo VS variable speed pump to replace a 1.5 hp single speed pump



Pentair MasterTemp 125 Low NOx Pool Heater to replace Hayward heat pump

[h=1]Hayward S180T Pro Series 18" Top-Mount Pool Sand Filter to replace a full size Speck sand filter[/h]


Here's my question. The people who open and close my pool said that the variable speed pump was too powerful for the Hayward S180T because of its small size. Is this true? Obviously I don't want the sand filter to explode. I have a small inground pool (8' X 16') and only 2,600 gal. The reason for the VS pump is that the pool is being enclosed so that we can swim this Winter.

Any thoughts on any of this will be greatly appreciated.

Paul,

Unlike a single speed pump, with a VS pump you chose the amount of HP you want to use. You can set the pump so that it runs very slowly, will use next to nothing in electrical power, and your filter will probably only show about 1 lb. of pressure..

I can't see it blowing anything up.

As an example, I have a 3 HP IntelliFlo and run it at 1,200 rpm. At that speed my filter pressure is only 2 or 3 lbs..

Most of the heater experts on this forum recommend Raypak heaters for their simplicity and longevity. They are easier to fix and have fewer components that fail.

Oversizing the filter is always a good idea if you can afford it. A bigger filter means less frequent cleanings and better flow performance (lower head loss).

Will enclosing the pool cut off exposure to the sun? If so, you may need to consider adding a UV system to the equipment if your pool is no longer going to get UV from the sun. UV does a lot to keep CC levels low.
