I kinda knew this was going to happen but decided to do it anyway ...

You can see my PoolMath logs for the latest test results. I added an 8oz start up dose of SKILL-IT algaecide (BioDex) to see if it would help with wasp control. We have mud-daubers (paper wasps) around here and they LOOOOVE pool water. I get 2 or 3 wasps per day landing on the pool water surface many times per hour and then watch them as they fly off to their nests in the neighbors yards. Once I had a wasps nest INSIDE the bathroom exhaust vent pipe up at the roof. Had to spend quite a few days blocking off the vent, poisoning the the nest and then covering the roof cap with plastic so that they would all die. What a PITA!! So whenever I see a wasp at my pool, I always tend to watch it to see where it flies off to. If it heads towards my roof, I get up on the ladder and go on a wasp hunt. Thankfully no more nests up there since the last one.

The interesting part to me is that there are two theories to how SKILL-IT works - (1) either the chemical is displeasing to, or kills, the wasps when they draw up water, OR, (2) the primary chemical in SKILL-IT is both an algaecide and a surfactant and the surfactant changes the surface tension of the water enough to make the wasps not able to walk on the water.

I won't have enough evidence to decide which is which, BUT, if you look at the photo with the aerator setup (its a Venturi aerator that I screwed into my waterfall's auxiliary return line), the bubbles being generated by it are champagne size and very diffuse. Before adding SKILL-IT, that aerator would simply put out huge, globular bubbles like the kind you get by blowing back through a straw in water. So the SKILL-IT definitely changes the surface tension of the water as that is the only way that you could get such a drastic change in bubble sizes.

Suffice it to say that the stuff pours like Palmolive dish soap ... and has nice fruity aroma ... not that I'm sniffing the chemicals or anything .... 🤪🥴😵‍💫😵

Note that this stuff is what TFP calls a "cheap, linear quat algaecide" and so it is known that these algaecides breakdown easily from chlorine and eventually dissipate. So even if nothing changes for me, the bubbles should be gone in a week or so as I tend to run the FC on the hot side.

I thought borates also change the surface tension of the water and insects stay away.

You still have borates in your pool?

Yes. Just measured them too. 56ppm B.

I don’t know that the surface tension change is all that much with borates because the bubbles from the aerator were never affected. And even so, boron only kills CERTAIN insects and, sadly, the wasp has been honed by evolution to be an apex predator of the insect kingdom. I’ve always said that they probably LOVE my pool water because the borates make their paper nests resilient against mold and fungal growth.

And wasps don’t use the water for drinking, they use it to make their nests. They get the water they need by devouring other insects … 😳

I’ll also have to keep an eye on filter pressure. The change in surface tension and the fact that these cheaper algaecides can act as clarifiers as well, might make my filter pressure go up. I have a DE filter so it should be pretty sensitive to anything acting like a clarifier.

Only time will tell how much pain this might cause me …. 😬

Check out this video I just captured -

I walk outside and saw a little activity on the water. On closer inspection, a wasp had just landed. It is definitely not able to stand on the water. The video makes that pretty clear.

However, with my luck, I'll probably go outside tomorrow morning and find the pump fried from losing prime because there's a skimmer basket full of a million dead wasps ... the AZ DEQ will publish an alert about a sudden massive die off in the endangered Sonoran paper wasp population and I'll probably be fined like a million dollars in environmental damages plus 30 years to life in federal prison ... I need to start searching Zillow for properties in Belize ....

Will be interesting to see how long they take to die, and how you are going to empty the skimmer basket if it turns into a swirling mound of wasps...

Me emptying the skimmer tomorrow ...

I just sat out there for a bit and actually witnessed a wasp trying to land on the water. It made several attempts but clearly couldn’t get itself to float. After about 3 or 4 tries, it flew off. Unlike his dead buddy, he had the smarts to move on.

One other aspect of all this is how long the effect will last. The SKILL-IT initial dose is 8oz. Then you’re supposed to add maintenance doses weekly at a rate of about 2oz (for my pool size). I’ll keep an eye on the aerator bubbles and see if I can detect a change in their size. Maybe I’ll use that as a proxy for knowing when to dose 🤔 There are test kits available for measuring the concentration of quaternary ammonium compounds (which this stuff is) but I’m not about to drop money on a kit for that.

Did some quick early morning testing and I report no significant changes in water chemistry and no uptick in CCs at all. Water is clear. I will check the filter later today for any changes in pressure.

Liquid solar cover might help if you don't have a lot of wind and the skimmers are off.

Pool Perfect can sit on the surface for a while with no wind and no skimmers.

To me, the cheap algaecide has a disagreeable smell.

Too much wind here. Late afternoon the wind blows pretty strongly from the southeast. And I get enough fine leaf debris from around the yard that the liquid cover stuff would just create a mess.
