Update: OCLT Results and Next Steps. Question Re: OCLT

Results of OCLT
Evening 7ppm
Morning 5ppm

Guess it is time to SLAM? Is it ok to SLAM since there was an AA treatment last week? This is odd since my water is clear.,

Yes. All it means is that it may aggravate any metals in the water, but you have no choice when organics take over. :( Clear water to the eyes can be misleading, but your testing is not.

It’s 5:15pm eastern and I have added almost 4 gallons on LC. My shock level is 16. Last chlorine test was 13.5 FC. Maybe making progress? Is the goal to get to shock level and hold at the level overnight? Also I am finding small white flakes floating at the top of the pool. Algae? Maybe? Time to head to the big box store since I sorely underestimated the amount of LC I will need for this adventure. Cheers.

The SLAM continues day 3. I am feeling defeated. Testing every hour or two and pouring chlorine. I loose the most during the day. At night still losing 3ppms.

Still trying to find the source of the algae. Took two photos of opening to skimmer. Hard to see but there is brown stains between the tile and grout. I scrubbed and it does not come off. Could this be algae? If so how do I clean it? Thanks.

Could this be algae?
Might be. Try a small bristled brush. Day 3 is still fairly early in a SLAM. so don't be too hard on yourself. Hang in there. Maintain the FC as best as you can. Don't forget the trouble areas like behind a light (nice) or if you have a drain under the cover. Brush daily.

I am STILL slamming and DUMPING massive amounts of chlorine into my small pool and brushing. Still, there is no evidence of algae with the exception of what MAY be outside of the skimmer. Do I continue down this path? Can there be something else going on in the pool? It would be a lot easier if I had evidence. Am I supposed to perform regular testing during the SLAM?

I went back from post #1 to reevaluate. Let's confirms some things:
1 - Most current CYA?
2 - Did you ever decide to remove that light to flush behind it?
3 - I don't recall discussing a main drain. Do you have one, and if so, have you looked under the cover?

1.I have not tested my my CYA in over a week. I will do that in a few and report back.
2. I have not removed it yet - need some help with it. I am worried I won’t be able to get it back on.
3. I have 2 drains on the bottom of the deep end - assume this is what you mean by main drain?

THANK YOU!!!

CYA is a tough one but looks to be 20. Should I add stabilizer?

Yes. A CYA of 20 is much too low in the summer. It still doesn't explain more than 1 ppm FC loss in hours of darkness, but your CYA should be 30 minimum during a SLAM and even if you go to 40 that would only require an FC SLAM level of 16. As for the drains - yes. At some point it would be good to remove the covers and look inside. They have been known to hide lots of gunk.

At the beginning of the SLAM my CYA was 40. My SLAM level is 16. Should I add more CYA? Do I have to drain my pool to open the drains. I am single managing this solo - feel like I am way above my head.

I would just confirm the CYA tomorrow if possible. No need to drain the pool. You're only hoping to remove the covers and look down into the drain area for algae or junk. You can switch water suction to the skimmer(s) only though if you would like.

I will take another CYA tomorrow. I should not add stabilizer tonight? I just added another 78 oz of LC. I’ve added nearly 15 gallons of LC since the start 5 days ago for a 10,000 gallon pool. Does that seem like a a lot? Re: drains I don’t mean to sound ignorant but not sure how I will open the drains - they are in the deep end. I am worried. Will do another OCLT tonight. Thanks again.
