Trying to figure this all out! OVERWHELMED!

I am new here so you can take or leave my opinion.

I too had horrible problems and recently did a conversion from BaquaPOOP to chlorine and also replaced my crappy filter cartridge with a Hayward T166S Sand Filter and its 100% better filteration and I only wish I had done it sooner. Didnt have to buy a pump cause my 1HP pump I had worked just great with the filter system I got.

I would recommend sand filteration to anyone and everyone seems to filter much better.

Like I said just my opinion take it or leave it.
I love others opinions! Especially when I'm in dire straights. Thanks much and I'm looking into the sandfilters right this moment! :) I just need to know where to go get one (besides online as I need it NOW)

You could try craigslist or some other such online classifieds for a used system in your area. It may be a gamble but would be cheaper in the short term. We usually have lots of people in the area taking down pools at houses they just bought, so usually the equipment is working.

Just a thought.

If you are adding a filter to your current setup you want to add it after the existing pump/filter combo unit.

Sears, Home Depot, etc hardly ever have pool filters other than Intex. But most pool stores will carry them. You will almost always get a better price over the Internet.

You are correct as I went to two pool stores and they quoted over $300 just for the filter. I found it online for $160. One more question and I think you already answered this but is my 1500 gph pump sufficient to draw the water through the 14" sand filter?

For what it is worth - we ordered a filter online on Thursday, and we got it Saturday. That is really close to now for the added savings.

The pump should be fine. You have a fairly small pool and it doesn't need all that much water movement. Once the sand filter is installed and working you will probably want to remove the cartridge from the Intex filter and leave it out.

Thanks! I just ordered it. I'll deal with the cloudiness for a little while longer.

I can totally commiserate with you. I have had cloudy water for a week, and I can't clear it up.

My numbers are all good, not even any cc's. I keep shocking the heck out of it. I even have a good size filter and pump.

Hope you will be swimming soon!!!!

Thanks Carolyn! Misery loves company!

I have pool envy so bad that when I see a clear beautiful pool I want to SCREAM!

It's unbelievable! I was at my wits end last night and had a stupid idea of putting an extra filter on a pipe and attached it to the return water coming back into the pool. It's just floating there in the pool with the return water filtering through again. IT WORKED!!!!!!!!!!!! The filter was FILTHY (brown) this morning and I can see the bottom of my pool!!!!!!!!!!!!!! So, what did I do (after my happy dance)???? I cleaned the filter and put it back on to run while I'm at work today.

I'm flabergasted and amazed something so stupid worked so well! :sun:

P.S. Maybe I should add this to the tips/tricks section.....I know it's no "fixit" but it works in a pinch!

Learning is a painful process. Maybe some pick it up quick but I had to have 10 people tell me the same thing in different ways before it really sank in. These guys took me from a green swamp to crystal clear water in about 2 weeks. A week of that was wasted by me not having the right test kit and by just not quite getting EXACTLY what I should be doing. It seems so simple once you get to the other side but the initial part is overwhelming. All the chemistry stuff to get your mind around and the mechanical stuff as well.

Stick with it. Sounds like you've made great progress already. It's easy to feel beaten over the head here but I do think everyone tries to help as best they know how.

Pics for today. First is my makeshift 2nd filter system  This time I put it on the water intake so the water gets sucked through the filter in the pool before going through the outside filter. It works WONDERFULLY and has been coated with muck each day (AMAZING)! This is after I cleaned the filter. You can see the dirt being sucked to it. :-D

This is a pic of my water today. Of course this was after I brushed so it's still not there yet but it's making great progress considering when I brushed before it stirred all the "dust" into a cloud. You can see my bleach stain from where my floater sprung a leak and sank to the bottom. :grrrr:

It may not seem like much to you all but for me to walk up and instantly see the bottom is such a wonderful feeling!

Still anxiously waiting for my sand filter! It shipped today!!

Seeing the bottom is HUGE. I was in heaven when I got to that point. I have those wedding cake type stairs down into mine. Every day I'd see more detail of the next step down until finally, there was the liner. Since we had just bought our house, I had no idea what the liner really looked like ! haha

You're well on your way now. Congrats.
