Travertine Deck

Just getting started on my pool and are planning on installing a travertine deck and coping. The product will be a paver (3cm), I'm trying to decide whether or not to fill the travertine and whether to grout the seems. I'm not a fan of grout in general especially in wet areas but I'm concerned if I don't grout or fill the travertine holes that I might be leaving things open to collect water/debris/algae. Can anyone tell me there experience with a travertine deck and what they ended up doing for their install? Any pitfalls I should be aware of with a travertine deck?

I believe most travertine installs are done by butting the pavers up to each other with little to no gap. Unless they are being installed over a cement pad I would not recommend using grout.

I don't recall anyone having issues with algae on their pavers. I have cement pavers around my pool that are very porous and have had zero issues with dirt/debris buildup and certainly no algae, on the deck or in the pool.

I used approx 1000 sqft of travertine pavers for the decking around my pool. The pavers will installed on top of compacted 1/4"- granite with no grout or sealer. The outside course of pavers is installed using mortar to prevent the pavers from moving, but all other pavers are just placed down without mortar or grout. When all of the pavers were placed, fine sand was spread on the top of the pavers and into the gaps between each paver to "lock" them all together. My contractor (who I woud never recommend) use std sand for this and it has been fine, but there is a product called "polymeric" sand that is commonly used around pools in AZ to reduce the amount of loose sand.

My pool was completed in June so it's only been a few months, but so far I haven't had any issues with the travertine pavers
