Total newbie moving into a home with a pool

Depends on what levels you have in your pool. 'Pool Shock' can be trichlor, dichlor, cal hypo, or liquid chlorine. The first three can add something you may or may not need besides the chlorine.

Personally, I would have them open the pool and get the pump running. Run the pump for the rest of the day and test the chemistry the next morning. Then see what needs to be adjusted.
Thanks. Will do that. Hopefully the pool won’t be full of nasty surprises. Have no clue what condition it’s in! It was winter when we saw the home

TFP basics.
Don't do anything until you can test yourself.
Step 1, you need CYA to protect your FC. Test your CYA, add enough, after testing, to get to at least 30ppm. For normal operations in Ontario, 30-50 CYA is fine. Use "chlorine stabilizer" in a sock (old one, tied off, filled with stabilizer, and put it in the pool carrot on a stick style in front of a return).
Step 2, add enough liquid chlorine to maintain your FC for your CYA. If the sock is in the pool with enough CYA to raise to 30, consider your CYA to be 30. Link-->FC/CYA Levels
Step 3, 4, 5...manage your pH next, then CH.

Why type of pool do you have? (vinyl, Fiberglass or plaster?)

Are those levels of CYA okay for salt water pool in Ontario?

I haven’t seen the pool as it was covered when we saw the home. Going by pictures, I think it is vinyl or fiberglass

I'm in Ohio, just south of you. You will find CYA of 60-70 to be just fine, anything higher is a de minimus return. I run CYA of 80-90, only to reduce SWG usage. You will find >70 CYA to not have much benefit over 60.

For new pool salt pool owners, we recommend 60 CYA, until you know how your pool acts and you can maintain proper FC.. At 60 CYA, it is much easier to SLAM, if you cannot maintain FC.

My advice is to maintain CYA of 60. When you can demonstrate you can maintain proper FC for 60, then raise to 70 or 80. Raising to higher levels is strictly an effort to extend the life of the cell.

I may be getting ahead of myself, and I feel like this is probably something I’m not to worry about as of now, but I’m curious as to how raising the CYA extends the life of the cell?

To my understanding higher CYA=requires higher FC. Doesn’t that mean the cell would be working harder to produce more FC?
