So I just bought a house that has a 18’ above ground pool with a Hayward ec40 pump/filter and I hooked it up, turned it on and I feel like it’s pumping a lot of water. If I close the door to the bug trap it starts to pump “normally” for a little bit. I don’t really know what it’s supposed to be like but any help would be appreciated. Thank you!

Sounds like you're water level is off. By bug door I think you mean the skimmer weir. that should flow easily back and forth. Closed, the pump will be starved for water and the pump can overheat.
Can you take a picture of your water level at the skimmer.
Also, did you add DE to the filter upon start up? Did you open up the filter to see if the inside filter "fingers" are clean?
