To SLAM or not to SLAM. That is the question

Good Morning Gents. I have to SLAM my pool due to high CC and next to zero FC. I’m pretty new to the pool scene being my second year with a pool and have tried to shock and oxidize to get rid of CC and that hasn’t worked so reading threads here it seems like I’m dealing with ammonia and need to slam the pool. MY Question is we are expecting 5 days of continuous rain here in Northeastern PA and was wondering if I SLAM the pool water today would the constant rain effect that process or should I wait till next week after all the rain. I believe I am dealing with ammonia in the water. I have a TP-100 on the way I ordered last night. Pool store tested water and FC was .4 and CC was 4.8. Thanks for your input!!

Welcome to TFP!!:handwave:

Don't automatically go to ammonia, it's not a common as folks believe and I would never give advice based on pool store testing.

You don't give us any details on our pool, so I can't make any recommendations.

Please edit your signature and add the following information so we can better frame our answers to you.

  • List what test kit you use to test your water
  • The size of your pool in gallons
  • If your pool is an AG (above ground) or IG (in ground)
  • If it's IG, tell us if it's vinyl, plaster/pebble, or fiberglass
  • The type filter you have (sand, DE, cartridge)
  • If you know, tell us the make and model of your pump and filter.
  • List any other equipment you have: SWG, second pump, etc.
  • Please mention if you fill the pool from a well or are currently on water restrictions

Information in your signature will show up each time you post and it makes advice more accurate as we know what equipment we are dealing with.

Ok I updated as much as possible that I know off hand on the signature. Will get more detail when I go home. When I opened the pool I initially added 6lbs of anthony Sylvan supertreat, then a few days later after testing w, the drop kits and pool store test I had very little FC and high CC. they first told me to go home adjust PH Bc it was 7.9 and the. Later that night shock it again w 3 lbs. I did that was waited 2 days and retested with the strips, drops, and pool store and again the FC was around .4 and CC WAS AROUND 4.8 so they next had me add 7lbs of an oxidizer (scorch plus I believe) and here we stand 3 days with high CC. And barely any FC. Again I just ordered the TF 100 test kit but prob won’t be in for a few days so I don’t know if I should take any action or what action to take.

OK, that is information I can deal with.

You have a fairly large pool, so until you get your TF-100 add one bottle of chlorine to the pool each day. No more solid forms of chlorine until we see what your CYA is.

The fact that you went from X level (unknown exact level after shock) of chlorine to .4 after 3 days is not conclusive evidence of anything except the chlorine went somewhere. Over 3 days it could have gone anywhere..... Chlorine is a consumable item in a pool. The average clear pool with no problems uses 2 - 4 ppm of chlorine every day.

I'm not seeing anything to push the panic button over right now.

Ok when you say bottle of chlorine do you mean a 96oz jug of chlorox? I assume when you say no more chlorine that means I should empty my feeder and shut it off bc I use 3” pucks of tricolor. Also the 1 bottle a day is that just to keep the sanitizer in the pool until I get a true number of what my chemistry is without raising CYA? Thanks again I’m starting to grasp the whole chemistry thing but certainly and still a beginner.

Well, as to size I say a 121oz (they are no longer gallon jugs) of plain unscented bleach. Be careful, the bleach companies are starting to add "enhancers" to bleach. Clorox calls it "Clormax Technology". A tenet TFPC philosophy is - Never put chemistry in your pool when you do not know the outcome. We don't know what this "new stuff is, so we don't want it.

Yes, turn off the puck chlorinator and use the bleach for basic sanitation until we can see what your levels are. The biggest problem we see with pools is over-stabilization due to 3" pucks and powered shock. Some here would say never use them, but I'm a believer that they can be used if you understand what they bring to the table (pool) and manage it properly.

Ok test kit came in and I just did a panel of tests

FC 2.5
CC 4.5
PH 7.5
CH 325
TA 230
CYA 90

I have had chlorination off for 3 days and have put 1 121oz jug of bleach in a day for sanitization. It has rained nonstop for 3 days and forecasted for 4 more days of constant rain. My pool is going to have to be drained a bit bc it’s now above the skimmer.
