I just posted a follow-up thread as new and it was moved to the original thread. All good, no problem there, but I have a question. When I went to the original thread to post an update, it had a banner across it saying I should start a new thread. So, how do I know when to start a new thread or not?

Typically, if the topic is the same subject and also close in time, you should continue the thread.

If the new post would benefit from the context of the existing thread, then you should probably continue the thread.

If the thread is a completely different topic and a different time where the context of an older thread is not helpful, then start a new thread.

There is a formula that can determine for sure, but it is generally not worth doing the full calculation unless you just enjoy that sort of thing.

If LSM is greater than or equal to 37, then start a new thread.

If LSM is less than 37, then do not start a new thread unless there are special circumstances that warrant a new fresh thread.

If you are talking about the same topic and providing updates that may take place over a period of time, post to the original thread. If it is a different problem/issue/question, start a new one.

We don't want people resurrecting threads with long gone members, often just to 'me too' or discus their similar problem with different parameters.

If it's your thread and on topic, we encourage you to continue with updates for continuity. Otherwise you have several pieces of the puzzle spread over multiple threads and any new help is harder for us. Or anyone finding your old thread won't see the 'this worked great and has been going strong for 5 years' update when they were looking for similar help. :)
