There is no way these numbers can be right!

Trying to shock my 30,000 gallon pool. FC was 13 yesterday and CYA is 50, I put 4 121 oz bottles of 10% chlorinating liquid in yesterday, today the level is 12. My TFT-100 is less than a year old. Is it possible my test kit is bad or perhaps I got a bad batch of chlorine? I just can't see my pool using that much chlorine in a day.

By pool math estimates, the added chlorine should've brought my pool FC to 25 and daily sun/pollen should've dropped it to 22-23.

On an average normal sunny day I agree. Your FC should have dropped 3 to 4 points maybe with normal levels.. BUT.....you mentioned you are trying to "shock" it. I assume you have a reason for that. Excess FC over and above your range for your CYA will also burn off much quicker. I would suggest an OCLT to see if anything funky is going on there.

You lost me with OCLT. You are correct, I was going through a bottle of bleach per day which felt like too much considering nobody is using the pool. In the event there was some lurking presence I decided to make one swift killing of everything. Nothing scientific behind my shock, just an overabundance of caution since we lost the pool to green algae for a full month around this time last year. But those bottle cost $4 each, I'm on pace to spend almost $500/month on chlorine.

Pool School - Perform the Overnight FC Loss Test (OCLT)

We have similar size pools and I spent $200 on chlorine last year.

I don't see how that is possible. I estimate a normal summer month to run me $120, there is no way I can get $200 to stretch all year. Unless you are getting your chlorine for significantly less than I'm paying or your pool is in a hermetically sealed bag with no outside contaminants or sunlight...

I guess a better question would be, is there a way to test the efficacy of my bleach? I just put 2 more bottles in which should've given me a 6 FC rise but I only got a 4 FC rise. It's possible I didn't let it mix fully; however, I tested in the exact area where I added bleach. If anything the test should've been a false high reading rather than the other way around.

Thanks, I'll test again later. I guess adding chlorine during the day isn't optimal but I'm frustrated and want to get this resolved NOW :). This pool has been FAR worse than owning any boat or plane, nothing but trouble and money with almost no enjoyment as payoff. I pretty much hate my pool with every fiber of my being.

My pool uses at most 2ppm/day. A half gallon of 8.25 every day works just great, so call it 5 bottles a week or $15. It gets warm mid April, cools mid September so outside the traditional Memorial Day - Labor Day weeks it's less hungry. So maybe it was closer to $250 but not by much.
