I just got mine out with a whole lot of dread and almost NO difficulty. This filter is probably 20 years old.

First, I rinsed the tank really well. Then I filled it with water to above the whole elbow assembly and let it soak for a bit. Then used long, flat head screw driver to unlock the locking tab and left it wedged in there. Then I took both hands and laced them together under the elbow and pulled steady, straight up, with force. And our it came.

I don't know if temperature helped but it has been cold the last few days, not even reaching 60⁰ daytime high.

Good luck.

I ran into similar issues and frustrations when I discovered my check valve had been destroyed by rodents during storage time. After completely cleaning the contents and lubricating the area with penitration oil, as many have also tried and still no luck. I tried tying a heavy rope to the front of the tube closest to the front of the tube and then suspending the entire filter tank from the rope about a foot or so off the ground. At this point it was just a matter of pushing down on the tank and the tube popped off with little resistance. It may have been all of the above that helped, but in the same situation again I will attempt to go right to the suspending the tank as my first option.
