I've maintained the pool successfully for 9 years following the TFP model. However, I no longer have access to reliable sources of liquid bleach. I was using 6% but it now randomly ranges from 3 to 5% and various vendors all have the same supply source. After nearly doubling costs, never knowing the correct dosing, and churning through daily FAS-DPD tests (an expensive and difficult import) I have had to switch to tablets.
Between bleach issues, a faulty CYA test kit and a pump motor dying, all at the same time I had to deal with (SLAM) an algae bloom. The last two issues have been solved, as was the first, but only by using tablets (trichloro-s-triazinetrione) and a shock (sodium troclosene) from a known (hopefully) reputable source - SPIN (Mexico).
Following TFP's SLAM procedure I have been able to "clear" the algae. Hopefully. Almost? This morning was the fourth day of a SLAM—pump/filters running 24/7, filters cleaned twice a day, tablets in in-line chlorinator. The pool was clear but a little cloudy. I will do a OCLT tonight (chlorinator turned off). The OCLT post states that one of the success criteria is: "....and your water is clean". Does clear, looking clean, but a bit cloudy count?
When using liquid chlorine the pool has always been sparkling clear. I have had to use tablets in the past as the only source to add CYA. Whenever I do the water looks a wee bit "cloudy", less sparkly. The person who helps with gardening and property upkeep has also noticed this. Is there something about tablets and water chemistry that can cause this? Our water source is primarily a well and at times from a rain water cistern for top ups. The well water has a visibly high calcium content—calcium ring around pool edge, stains on basins, sinks and having to replace "frozen" shut off valves at times. Water stats from just before SLAM and struggles with liquid bleach:
